WHEN & WHY DID YOU START:
In the Spring of 2014, my body decided enough was enough. Years of intense workouts coupled with long days spent sitting at a computer had taken their toll: tight hamstrings, shortened iliopsoas, stiff cervical and thoracic spine, and chronic headaches. After a bit of research into yoga and trial-and-error, I was drawn to Elements Hot Yoga and have been hooked from day one.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE:
What initially attracted me to yoga was simply how this ancient practice had endured over time and place. What did yoga provide to people across generations and all walks of life? For me, yoga reunites body and mind; yoga stops the clammer and chatter that occupies the mind and filters out external noises. Along with an increased awareness and appreciation for the physical body, yoga peels back the layers of the inner person and reveals deeper facets just yearning to be let out and recognized. Yoga has allowed me to reestablish boundaries, redefine how I want to live life and stay in tune with what is truly important.
Yoga has provided the means of dealing with life outside the studio: in facing yourself within the confines of the mat, you gain the ability to let things go, embrace gratitude and see things from a more realistic, balanced perspective. In yoga and in life, some days are met with balance and grace where other days, it's everything to simply hold Child's Pose. Shit happens. Shine as bright as you can in this moment because this moment is all there is. Yoga has given me the courage to laugh at myself. Yoga has taught me how to listen to my body and recognize when stories are holding me back from being in the moment.
I absolutely love the instructors as well as the fellow yogis. I benefit from and appreciate the teaching style of each instructor: from refining technique and improving endurance to letting go of life's nagging distractions so one's inner light can shine and be felt. Fellow yogis are supportive and encouraging; there is no judgment or competition, only a sense of togetherness and a sharing of energy during this precious time carved from our hectic schedules. I cannot express my gratitude for the space provided at Elements Hot Yoga.
ARE YOU CURRENTLY FACING ANY CHALLENGES WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE?
I am currently challenged with tight/short iliopsoas (hip flexors) which has an impact on various poses. Rather than charging ahead and forcing a pose that aggravates the issue, I have had to remind myself to back off and modify particular poses in order to build a stronger base to grow from.
Currently my favorite pose is side crow. Simply put, side crow is fun and makes me feel like a carefree 5-year-old kid.
